When people ask AI for the best studio in town, who gets the class?
“What's the best reformer pilates studio in Boston?” is exactly the kind of question people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. The answer names about five studios. Here's what those answers rely on in Boston, from our own measurements, and what a studio can do about it.
Where AI answers about studios come from
Share of the 48 answers that cited each source (Claude with web search; pilates, barre, HIIT, boutique fitness, gym and personal-training questions about Boston, September 2026):
For a studio, the picture is different from trades: the AI reads local editors' lists (Boston Magazine, Boston Insider and roundup sites) almost as much as reviews, plus the booking platforms where classes are listed.
What to fix first, as a studio
- Yelp. Claim it, list every class type you actually run, and keep reviews coming. It was in 43 of 48 answers.
- The local lists. Boston Magazine's Best of Boston and the roundup sites the answers cited take nominations or update on a schedule. A short, specific note to the editor (what you do, for whom, where) is how studios get considered.
- ClassPass and Mindbody. If you're on them, make the profile complete: class types, neighborhood, instructor names.
- Google Business Profile. The right primary category (“Pilates studio”, not “Gym”), services, hours and recent photos.
- Your own site. Class types, schedule, pricing and instructors in plain text, plus LocalBusiness structured data. Of the 16 studios we audited, 5 had no business structured data and 5 had no phone number an AI could read. Run our free check to see where yours stands.
- Reviews that say what's special. “Classes of eight, great for beginners” gives an AI something to repeat.
How AIMS helps studios
The free fix pack asks Gemini and Claude the questions your customers ask, for your kind of studio and neighborhood, three times each. You get who was named instead of you, the exact sources those answers cited (which lists, which platforms), and the specific fixes, by email within two business days. If you'd rather we make the changes, the fix kit is $400, paid only once they're live.
Limits: one assistant (Claude with web search), one month (September 2026), 16 Boston fitness and wellness businesses (including one barber shop and one posture clinic) chosen for audits rather than at random. Gemini and ChatGPT may weigh sources differently; we're measuring Gemini now too.
